Back to school season is upon us and MVDC has received several requests about colleges that provide discounts for military personnel and veterans. We understand that it can be a bit confusing to navigate the different funding programs by the VA and the DOD, the differences in accreditation and just how to select the right program. In an effort to help you simplify your back to school decision, we’ve provided a quick primer on funding programs and accreditation. We've also compiled our first annual top colleges for military discounts. In addition to military discounts, there are also online colleges that offer laptops to students.

Grantham University Grantham University is an innovator in military education. For over 60 years, Grantham University has served the active duty and veteran population and aspires to be an internationally recognized leader among distance learning higher education institutions serving students who desire an alternative to traditional institutions of higher learning.

Liberty University offers qualified military students and their spouses a discounted flat tuition fee of $250 per credit hour for online classes. The discount applies to all level of programs including Associations, Bachelors and Masters as well as some Doctoral classes. The school also offers the Heroes Fund Scholarship to service members or veterans who have been wounded in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. The scholarship is open to spouses of soldiers who have been killed in action during these operations as well.

Grand Canyon University offers a discounted flat tuition rate for military personnel. For undergraduate degrees, the rate is $250 per credit hour. For graduate degrees, the rate is $400 per credit hour and for doctoral degrees the flat rate is $598.50 per credit hour. The discount applies to active duty service members and veterans. The Grand Canyon University also waives the Learning Management Fee.

Columbia Southern University is recognized as one of the top 20 schools for military education by Military Advanced Education. With over half of its students being service members, CSU offers an application fee waiver for all service members. Dependents of active duty military receive the fee waiver as well as a 10% tuition discount. CSU also gives students credit for military training into degree programs.

Spring Arbor University provides a 30% discount to all veterans and active duty military personnel. The discount also applies to Active Army and Air National Guard. Spring Arbor also honors all federal and state military benefits. Students who may be receiving VA Chapter 33 benefits are not eligible to receive the 30% SAU discount.

Cost per credit hour: Cost varies depending on program. Range with military discount is $180 - $334. Cost includes books.

Southern New Hampshire University offers all active duty service members a tuition discount of up to 25% for online undergraduate classes. The discount brings the tuition rate to $225 per credit hour. Southern New Hampshire University is a member of the USAF Air University Associate to Bachelor Cooperative, the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership and the Service Members Opportunity Colleges.

Drexel University has been ranked in the top 100 “America’s BEST Colleges” by U.S. News and World Report and offers a competitive military discount for online classes of 10%-30%. Active duty military personnel, veterans and their dependents (which includes parents, spouses, and children) qualify for the discount.


Cost per credit hour: Varies depending on program. Range for Bachelor’s is $408/credit - $625/credit

Colorado State University - Global Campus is an online college created by the State of Colorado. It is the first online public university in the state and offers military tuition rates. Tuition is reduced to $250 per credit hour for a Bachelor’s Degree and $400 per credit hour for a Master’s Degree.

Upper Iowa University honors military students by providing a 10% discount on tuition. The discount applies to all military personnel which includes active duty members, Guardsmen, reservists and retirees. The discount also applies to military family members who have a military identification card.

Rasmussen College - Rasmussen College honors the military service of veterans, as well as current and retired service members by granting a 10% discount on all degree, certificate and diploma programs. The discount also applies to dependents and spouses of all active duty service members.

Trident University International offers a military discount program to all military students. Service members can earn up to 28 semester credits towards a Bachelor’s degree at no cost when using full DoD tuition assistance. The discount applies to regular military personnel, drilling and active duty reservists, retired military personnel and members of the National Guard. In addition, military spouses and military students not using tuition assistance will receive a tuition discount rate.

California Southern University offers active duty military personnel a 10% tuition discount for all online degree programs in business, psychology and law. CalSouthern has been designated a “Military Friendly School” for its extensive benefits to military students and their families.

Central Michigan University offers a military discount for active duty members, reservists and guard members currently serving in a branch of the United States military as well as dependents of active duty service members. The discounted rate is $263.00 per credit hour for covered undergraduate degree programs and $288.00 per credit hour for covered graduate degree programs. The rate applies to online or in-person classes.

Indiana Wesleyan University offers discounted tuition for member of the United States Armed Forces and the National Guard. All credit hours towards a Bachelors Degree are discounted to $250 per credit hour. Credits toward a Masters Degree are discounted 25% per credit hour.

Baker University in Kansas has been named one of America’s Top 2012 Colleges by Military Magazine. The school offers students who are active duty in the Reserves or National Guide a flat tuition fee of $250 per credit hour. The tuition discount is for students who are enrolled in the School of Professional and Graduate Studies and working towards a degree program. Spouses of active duty service men and women qualify for a 25% reduction in tuition. In addition, active duty personnel and their spouses do not have an application fee for business and management programs.

Regent University offers active duty military personnel, including active reservists, a flat tuition fee of $250 per credit hour. The discount also applies to veterans, spouses and dependent children. Regent University also gives active duty military, veterans, retirees and dependents a $200 bookstore credit every semester to offset the cost of books and materials.

Southern Wesleyan University offers tuition discounts to active duty military and their spouses as well as active National Guardsmen and reservists who have served in combat. For active duty personnel, qualifying Guardsmen and reservists, the discounted tuition rate is $250 per undergraduate credit hour. For graduate classes, qualifying service members receive $50 off per credit hour. Spouses of active duty military receive a discount of $25 per credit hour.

The George Washington University offers several military benefits to active duty service members. GW will waive the $60 admissions application fee and active duty students and reservists who have been activated in the past three years will receive a generous discount on select undergraduate online programs of 50% after GI Bill benefits have been applied.

Olivet Nazarene University offers active duty military and veterans a tuition discount of 50% after the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program benefits have been applied. The discount amounts to $25,000 per student per year. The discount is available to undergraduate students as well as graduate students and doctoral students. To be eligible for the discount, service members must have served at least three years of active duty after September 10, 2001.

Marist College honors active duty personnel, reservists and their adult dependents by providing a 25% tuition discount on selected undergraduate and graduate programs. The discount brings full time tuition (12 - 16 credit hours) to $11,063 per semester.

University of Notre Dame offers special military benefits to active duty, veterans and retirees for selected online classes. Military members enjoy a 15% discount on all online classes as well as the ability to exit and re-enter their program of study with no penalties.

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) - UMUC has been providing military specific services for over 60 years. UMUC is on military bases around the world and provides online classes allowing military members to further their education at any time, anywhere.

University of Louisville - The University of Louisville reduces the cost of all online courses, both undergraduate and graduate to $250 per credit hour for all active duty students. Located in the largest city in Kentucky, the University of Louisville has world wide reach with its extensive online program.

American Military University - American Military University caters to military and law enforcement personnel by providing a wide variety of degrees online. Courses have no specific login times so that students can log in and complete coursework when its most convenient.

Six Sigma Management Institute Military Scholarship - The Six Sigma Management Institute has a military and veterans scholarship program where service members can receive discounted tuition to the institute and save up to half of what civilians pay. The program is geared to for transitioning service members and veterans looking for Lean Six Sigma Certification. Black Belts earn on average $102,000 per year.
